Anatomy

What we engineer in every motor.

Six elements that determine whether a motor lasts the duty cycle. The Dormot specification dialogue starts with these and works outward.

01 02 03 04 05 06
01

Stator winding

Copper windings, electrical-grade laminated core, F-class insulation as standard. The winding geometry determines IE2, IE3 or IE4 efficiency.

02

Rotor and shaft

Squirrel-cage rotor, dynamically balanced. Hardened steel shaft machined to IEC tolerance — or to legacy drawing on file.

03

Bearings

Sealed deep-groove ball bearings, sized for the rated load. Re-lubrication paths from frame 160 upward.

04

Cooling fins

TEFC (IC411) by default. Fin geometry engineered for the duty cycle. Marine variants coated against salt corrosion.

05

Terminal box

IP55 minimum, IP65, IP66 or IP67 on request. Cable gland positions configurable: top, side, or rear.

Workshop and engineering

Replacement engineering, not catalog selection.

Most replacement work fails at the interface. The Dormot workshop in the Rotterdam region handles shaft, flange, and terminal box modifications in-house — the work that gets a motor to fit when the catalog motor doesn't.

L = 380 mm 01 02 03
Ø 38mmShaft modification
B5 → B14Flange conversion

Drawing archive

Decades of motor drawings, indexed and matchable. Legacy flanges and obsolete shafts cross-referenced against current IEC frames.

Shaft and flange engineering

Diameter, length, keyway, hardness. Custom OEM flanges machined to drawing in-house. Hardened or stainless on request.

Bench testing under load

Vibration-free vertical and horizontal test stands. Full electrical and thermal report on every motor that leaves the floor.

Reconditioning

Strip, rewind where required, vibration-balance to grade G2.5, full-load test. The Renew line is the documented output of this process.

Specify your replacement

Snap a photo. Fill in the dimensions. Get a quote within 24 hours.

When the catalogue number is gone but the installation isn't, the engineering starts with the measurements on the motor in front of you. The Dormot dimension sheet lets a service engineer record the frame, shaft, flange and terminal-box geometry of any existing motor — on the bench, on the vessel, on the production floor — and send it back to our engineering desk. We confirm the right Dormot line, the right specification, and the lead time.

Step 01

Download the sheet

A two-page PDF with all the dimensions, options, and electrical data we need to size your replacement. Print it, fill it in on the installation.

Download dimension sheet (PDF, 1 MB)
Step 02

Fill it in. Add a photo if you can.

Frame and shaft dimensions, manufacturer and type plate where readable, mounting orientation, ATEX zone if applicable. The dimensions matter more than the original part number.

Step 03

Email it. We respond within 24 hours.

In the spray booth

Shot-blasted, then coated to C5M in our spray booth.

After mechanical preparation, every motor passes through our in-house blast cabin, where the surface is shot-blasted to a clean profile. From there it goes directly into the spray booth, where it is suspended on chains for full 360° access and coated to corrosion category C5M under ISO 12944 — the specification for coastal and marine atmospheres. The chain mount is not staging. It is the working geometry that lets the coating reach every face of the housing in a single pass.

Engineering notes

Working notes from the engineering desk.

Short technical notes on recurring questions and edge cases. Written for the people who specify, install, and maintain Dormot motors.

Bearings Draft

Bearing selection for VFD-driven motors.

VFD operation introduces bearing currents through capacitive coupling between rotor and shaft. For motors above frame 280 driven by VFD, an insulated non-drive end bearing is standard. Below frame 280, the risk is application-dependent — long cable runs, high carrier frequencies, and lack of dV/dt filtering push the threshold lower.

Insulation Draft

When F-class is not enough.

F-class insulation (155°C) is the Dormot standard. It accommodates a 40°C ambient with normal margin. For engine-room installations regularly seeing 45–50°C ambient, the practical winding temperature can approach the F-class limit. In those cases, the motor is specified to H-class insulation (180°C) — same physical motor, different magnet wire and impregnation. The cost premium is modest; the longevity gain is substantial.

Flange Draft

Custom flanges for legacy installations.

A standard IEC frame motor will fit a standard IEC mounting. The replacement work that fails at the interface is almost always on installations where the original motor had a non-standard flange — a builder-specific bolt pattern, an offset shaft, or a flange diameter that doesn't match the modern equivalent. The Dormot workshop machines custom flanges to drawing in-house. The motor itself stays standard; the flange is the part adapted.

Marine Draft

Class society certification — what gets approved.

Class society type approval is not a blanket certificate for "all Dormot motors". It covers a specific motor type, frame range, voltage band, and protection class — and the approval document references those parameters. The Dormot Core line carries valid type approvals across all six societies for the standard configurations. Outside the standard envelope (custom voltage, unusual frame, special protection class), a per-case approval is required, which is engineered into the order.

About Dormot

A replacement-engineering brand. Built around two questions.

The first: does the new motor fit the existing footprint — frame, shaft, flange, terminal box — without engineering the application around it? The second: while the motor is out, can it be replaced with one that is more efficient, VFD-ready, and built for a longer duty cycle?

Dormot was established in 2000 as a dedicated electric motor brand by Van Bodegraven Elektromotoren — a family business trading in electrical materials since 1898, started in Feijenoord, Rotterdam. The brand operates from Wattstraat 8 in the Rotterdam region, with a second base in Piraeus, Greece, serving the Mediterranean shipping market since 2011.

The brand exists around two recurring questions in the replacement market. One: does the new motor fit the existing footprint — frame, shaft, flange, terminal box — without engineering the application around it? Two: while the motor is out, can it be replaced with one that is more efficient, VFD-ready, and built for a longer duty cycle? A third context — OEM series supply against a drawing-locked specification — uses the same engineering capacity in reverse. Dormot is built to serve all three.

In practice that means an in-house workshop that machines shafts, flanges and terminal-box positions to legacy drawing, a stock of motors held against the IEC frames that fail in service, and the engineering capacity to specify the right efficiency upgrade — IE2 to IE3 under EU MEPS, IE3 to IE4 where the duty cycle and payback justify it, or a VFD-ready retrofit where flow modulation has become the bigger lever than rated efficiency.

Three product lines extend from that core: Pro for engineered specials and ATEX, Core for stock-held marine and industrial replacement, Renew for reconditioned units. Sold and serviced through Van Bodegraven Elektromotoren, the parent company.

Energy upgrade

The motor is out. Two upgrade routes are open.

A replacement is also the rare moment when energy efficiency can be lifted without disturbing production. Dormot specifies the upgrade route case by case — usually one of these two.

Route 01

IE2 → IE3 efficiency step.

For installations still running pre-2017 IE2 motors, an IE3 (Premium Efficiency) replacement is the baseline upgrade and aligns the installation with current EU MEPS requirements. Same dimensions, same mounting, lower energy draw across the duty cycle. On continuously-running auxiliaries — cooling water pumps, HVAC fans, engine-room circulation — the energy delta typically pays back the price difference inside two years of operation.

IE2 → IE3EU MEPS< 2 yr payback
Route 02

VFD-ready retrofit.

On applications where flow or speed is no longer a constant — variable cooling demand, modulating ventilation, part-load pump duty — the larger efficiency lever is not the motor curve but the drive. The replacement Dormot motor is specified as VFD-compatible by default, with the option of insulated bearings and dV/dt filtering where the drive characteristics demand it. The motor is replaced once; the energy is saved every running hour after.

VFD-readyVariable dutyContinuous saving

Both routes are specified by VBE engineering against the actual installation, not against a brochure. Reach the desk through sales@vanbodegraven.nl.

OEM supply

Drawing-locked series supply. One type number, every shipment.

For pump manufacturers, davit and crane builders, compressor and HVAC manufacturers, and shipyards running multi-year production programmes. Dormot becomes the embedded motor — drawing frozen with engineering, sample approved by production, every shipment identical to the certified original.

Benefit 01

A single type number for the lifetime of the production run.

Frame, shaft, flange, terminal box position, winding configuration, IP class, and nameplate are fixed at sample approval. The OEM's purchasing department orders against one Dormot type number; the OEM's service organisation maintains against one part number. No variation between purchase orders.

Benefit 02

Engineering capacity for whatever the application needs.

Custom shaft diameter for the pump impeller. Builder-specific flange machined in-house. ATEX certification per zone. Brake motor for the davit drive. Class society type approval where the OEM's vessel programme requires it. The motor is built to the OEM's specification, not selected from a catalogue around it.

Benefit 03

Held in stock against your forecast — or built to your call-off schedule.

Two supply models. For higher-volume series, Dormot can hold finished motors in stock in the Rotterdam region against the OEM's rolling forecast — same-week shipment when the production line calls. For lower volumes or longer ATEX configurations, the build is scheduled against the OEM's programme. The arrangement is agreed up-front, not improvised per order.
